Torah Fund Luncheon Honoring Berenice Haberman

Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood is proud to honor Berenice Haberman for her many contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom and the greater Kansas City Jewish Community. She will be the honoree at our Torah Fund event, raising funds for the Jewish Theological Seminary.

On Wednesday, April 27th, 11:30 there will be a festive luncheon in Berenice’s honor in Goldsmith Hall. The event will also feature Entertainment by Michelle Cox, music director at The Temple Congregation B’nai Jehudah.

Berenice was born and raised in Oklahoma City, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Education. She grew up in a home that valued and celebrated Jewish life, Her parents instilled in Berenice and her brother, Howard Fagin, who lives in Atlanta, a deep love for Judaism, our people and our traditions. Both Berenice and her brother are very active in their Jewish communities.

At Beth Shalom, Berenice has served in multiple capacities. A former Board member of the congregation, she has served the Sisterhood continuously since relocation and retirement to Kansas City. Among the many offices she has held are president, vice president of Membership, Calendar Chair, Torah Fund Chair and co-vice president of the Gift Shop. She has been honored for Sisterhood Leadership Development and Simchat Torah Kallat Bereshit. Berenice is sought out for guidance and inspiration wherever she serves. Her quiet strength is a hallmark of the leadership she gives to all her endeavors.

Berenice has a deep passion for the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), where she has served as President, co-President and Board member. She is a life member of NCJW. Berenice is the wife of Roger, and mother of Marcy Simon, Milisa (Steve) Flekier, and Richard (Connie) Simon. She also has four stepchildren and she and Roger have 10 grandchildren.

The Torah Fund theme for 2021-2022 is B’Yachad, which means ‘Together’. This theme signifies the joy of sisterhood members working together year round to make important contributions to the Jewish community through their volunteer efforts at synagogues across the United States and Canada.

This is Torah Fund’s 80th year. Contributions of thousands of individuals to our grassroots fundraising effort have helped to educate and train generations of rabbis, cantors, scholars,
educators, summer camp directors, campus Jewish life staff, and committed lay leaders. These are the people who guide, teach, console and uplift our people whether in person or remotely, during these challenging times.
